Millions of cicadas will again invade parts of the United States this spring and summer with their beady red eyes and hauntingly loud song. These frightening, yet completely harmless, insects come around every year to mate and lay eggs, but they are cyclical and come back more en masse in intervals of either 13 or 17 years. Lucky for us this year, two particular groups, or broods as they’re known, are coming back at the same time. Brood 19, which is on a 17-year cycle, will invade 14 states across the Southeast and Midwest. At the same time, Brood 13 will arrive in five Midwestern states. Those who live in Illinois and Indiana will be lucky (or unlucky) enough to experience both of them.
