According to data from the CDC, more than a third of adults in the United States regularly get less than the recommended minimum seven hours of sleep a night — despite the fact that lack of sleep has been linked to health issues like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and depression. Research from the United Health Foundation (UHF) has found that these are the most sleep-deprived states in the country:

  1. Hawaii — 42.9% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  2. West Virginia – 41.4% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  3. Kentucky — 41.1% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  4. Tennessee – 40% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  5. Ohio — 39.7% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  6. Michigan – 39% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  7. New York — 38.6% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  8. Alabama – 38.6% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  9. Virginia — 38% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
  10. Georgia – 38% of adults sleep less than seven hours a night.
