Iowa Pork adds Cook to “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” NIL initiative with Cyclone players
(Clive, Iowa) November 1, 2023 – The Iowa Pork Producers Association’s viral “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” marketing initiative with Iowa State football players is adding a new element: Linebacker Alec Cook. Through an NIL (name, image, likeness) deal, Cook joins fellow Cyclones Myles Purchase, Tyler Moore, Tommy Hamann, and Caleb Bacon, encouraging Iowans to purchase pork products, and of course cook more ham and bacon.
The Iowa Pork Producers’ original social media post featuring a photo of Purchase, Moore, Hamann, and Bacon with several pounds of ham and bacon has received more than 2.6 million views on X (formerly Twitter) and the initiative quickly garnered statewide and national media attention. Raygun has sold hundreds of Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon t-shirts and Iowa Pork has given away nearly 9,000 posters featuring the original photo.
“We are so overjoyed with the great success of the “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” campaign and love that we’re able to encourage people to Cook Moore Hamann Bacon as well,” said Iowa Pork Producers Association President Trish Cook, a pig farmer from Buchanan County. “We had hoped it would go viral and it did in a very big way. Supporting these players and the We Will Collective has been a rewarding experience, and we’re helping the food pantries in their hometowns with donations of delicious and nutritious Iowa pork.”
The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is donating $4,000 worth of pork to food pantries in the hometowns of Myles Purchase, Tyler Moore, Tommy Hamann and Caleb Bacon, on behalf of each player. Caleb Bacon presented the Lake Mills Food Shelf in Lake Mills, Iowa with their donation on October 21.
As part of this new phase of the initiative, an additional $1,000 worth of pork will be provided for each food pantry, as well to Alec Cook’s selection, the Food Bank for the Heartland in Omaha. That totals $9,000 worth of pork, equating to 12,000 servings, to help fight food insecurity in each player’s hometown.
“Thank you to Iowa pork producers for giving us the chance to use our last names to promote the swine industry,” said Alec Cook, a redshirt freshman linebacker from Omaha. “It was a lot of fun to work together while also helping out our local communities.”
Iowa is the number one state in the nation for pork production and nearly 150,000 Iowans are employed by the pork industry.
Another new video, featuring an additional Cyclone football player, will be added to the “Purchase/Cook Moore Hamann Bacon” initiative very soon. Stay tuned.

Tiny Spider and Exoskeleton Found in Woman’s Ear
The next time you hear a rustling noise in your ear, your memory is going to take you right back to this nightmarish story.
A woman in Taiwan kept hearing a strange clicking and rustling sound for several days that was so annoying it kept her up at night. She thought it would go away but it didn’t, so she finally visited a doctor who have it checked out. The doctor took a close look inside her ear canal and found a spider that had apparently crawled inside and camped out for a few days.
The spider, the doctor noticed, had discarded its exoskeleton and was crawling around inside the ear canal. The doctor used a suction tube to pull out the spider and its exoskeleton, and the woman’s discomfort immediately went away.

‘Sexy bear’ caught dancing on camera: ‘That’s bear-ly legal’
A wildlife aficionado witnessed a bear-y sensual moment in the woods. Canadian Tom McClelland captured a hilarious video of a bear after setting up a trail camera in a wooded area in Johnson, Ontario. Footage caught the bear in what seemed like a private moment, breaking out some unique dance moves. The bear can be seen standing up on its hind legs with its front legs raised above its head while sliding its back up and down a tree — most likely for a good scratch. Nevertheless, it appears to onlookers like the bear might be bustin’ a move. McClelland posted the video on Instagram and captioned it, “Sexy Black Bear working the Stripper Pole” with the hashtags #burlesque and #poledancer. Folks on app couldn’t get enough of the bruin’s booty-shaking.

How You Butter Bread Reveals Your Personality
How you butter your bread may tell a lot about your personality. Whether you like to spread a thin layer of butter on your toast or thick globs of it from crust to crust, a body language expert says you’re revealing a lot about yourself. Research suggests that the average person spreads butter on 574 slices of bread a year, and human behavioral researcher Darren Stanton examined all the different ways of doing it and what each method tells about the type of person you are.
- The Glider: 50% of people say they glide their knife over the toast for an even spread. These people tend to be easygoing and calm in nature.
- Total coverage: 19% say they like a thick spread right up to the edges of the bread. They are very precise, methodical and organized.
- Clumper: 6% plop clumps of butter on their bread and don’t spread it evenly. They do things their own way and aren’t very good with time management.
- Crust-avoiders: 5% say they butter their bread but avoid the crust. They are typically very neat and tidy and consider themselves perfectionists.
- Double-sider: Those who butter both sides of a slice of bread tend to be creative, extroverted, and enjoy being the center of attention.
- Tear and spread: People who tear a slice of bread into pieces and then butter each piece are better communicators and are good at building trust.
- Barely there: Those who use very little butter on their bread are described as busy, outdoorsy go-getters.

Man Fakes Heart Attack To Avoid Paying Bill
A man in Spain has been arrested and charged with faking a heart attack at 20 different restaurants to avoid paying his bill.
Prosecutors say the 50-year-old man scammed free meals at restaurants in Spain’s Costa Blanca region, by theatrically faking a heart attack as soon as he was done eating. Each time, he would clutch his chest and faint on the floor, leading restaurant staff to call for an ambulance. This worked at at least 20 eateries until one restaurant owner suspected he was faking it and, instead of calling an ambulance, they called police. They also shared his photo with other restaurants with a warning to look out for the scammer. Meanwhile, a group of restaurants have filed a joint criminal complaint against him and are seeking to get him locked up.
This all sounds way too familiar….

Guinness World Records Names Pepper X the New Hottest Pepper
Move over, Carolina Reaper. Your reign as the world’s hottest pepper is over. There’s a new painfully spicy king of capsaicin and it’s called Pepper X. A South Carolina pepper grower named Ed Currie, who previously introduced the world to the Carolina Reaper, has grown a pepper that’s about twice as hot. Pepper X averages about 2.6 million Scoville Heat Units. To put that in perspective, the Carolina Reaper averages about 1.6 million Scoville Units and a jalapeno is anywhere between 3,000 and 8,000. Pepper X has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world, and Currie says he’s already working on growing an even hotter pepper.

VIDEO: Bigfoot ‘spotted’ in Colorado in broad daylight
A couple on a romantic break in Colorado claims to have captured the mythological creature Bigfoot on camera, wandering on the side of a mountain before sitting down to rest — all in broad daylight. Professed eyewitnesses Shannon and Stetson Parker — enjoying a trip for their tenth wedding anniversary — claim to have observed the legendary lummox while enjoying a sightseeing tour on the narrow gauge rail line between Durango and Silverton, in the Centennial State’s far southwest. “We were looking for elk in the mountains and my husband sees something moving and then can’t really explain it. So he’s like ‘Bigfoot!’” Shannon, a 44-year-old contractor from Cheyenne, Wyo. told The Post. “It was at least six, seven feet or taller. It matched the sage in the mountains so much that he’s like camouflaged when crouching down…if you asked before our trip we would have said maybe [Bigfoot] could be real, but now we’re convinced.”

Wacky Weather Words
Tired of your typical weather terms, like “scattered showers” or “hot and humid”? Try working one of these into your next weather conversation…
-Frog strangler: This goes back to the 1870s, and refers to a heavy downpour…apparently capable of drowning frogs. Also acceptable: ‘frog choker’, ‘frog drowner’, or substitute the word ‘toad’ for extra oomph.
-Gorilla hail: Coined by Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer during a Texas storm in 2020. It means just what you think it means – huge hail.
-Monkey’s wedding: Also known as a sunshower. Legends vary, but rats, bears, jackals and tigers have also been accused of arranging nuptials in this type of conditions.
–Turkey Towers: Storm chaser slang for clouds that rapidly build upwards, exhibiting a turkey-like “neck.”
-Microburst: When a surge of rain falls out of a thunderstorm and hits the ground, and pushes outward into a foot shape.
-Sting jet: A small area of intense winds that can cause extensive damage. The formation looks like a bee’s stinger or scorpion’s tail on weather maps.
-Bear’s cage: The area of a tornado where the view is literally blocked by rotating walls of rain or hail.
-Suck zone: The point basically when a twister literally sucks you up. (That’s not the technical term for it, obviously…)

Iowa Speedway to Host First-Ever NASCAR Cup Series Race in 2024
JOHNSTON, Iowa (Oct. 3, 2023) – NASCAR today announced that it is bringing its first-ever NASCAR Cup Series race to Iowa Speedway on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. CT on USA Network. This inaugural Cup Series race in Iowa Speedway culminates a weekend that will also include the NASCAR Xfinity Series at 2:30 p.m. CT on USA Network and ARCA Menards Series racing on June 14-16, 2024.
“Today’s announcement is an exciting one for NASCAR and for race fans in the state of Iowa,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Senior Vice President, Racing Development and Strategy. “They have long sought a NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway, and we’re happy to deliver that for them. We fully expect this to be one of the most highly-anticipated dates on the 2024 schedule and an amazing weekend of NASCAR racing in The Hawkeye State.”
“The things Iowans value most are what NASCAR represents best—hard work, family, and community—which is exactly why our partnership has always been a natural fit,” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said. “We’re thrilled to bring a NASCAR Cup Series race to Iowa Speedway next summer and for this incredible opportunity to introduce millions of racing fans to our great state.”
Iowa Corn will be the entitlement partner for the first-ever Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway. Comprised of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board and Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Corn works to unlock the potential of corn in a sustainable manner to meet the global need for food and energy. The name and logo of the Cup Series race will be announced in the near future.
“Iowa Corn is no stranger to racing and the Iowa Speedway as we helped introduce farmer produced biofuels to consumers through race sponsorships for a dozen years,” shared Craig Floss, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. “By bringing the NASCAR Cup Series to Iowa, farmers are able to showcase the power and performance of Sunoco Green E15 at the fastest short-track on the planet, which is surrounded by corn fields, the very source of that amazing, renewable, homegrown and affordable biofuel.”
Iowa Speedway successfully hosted the Xfinity Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series from 2009-2019, while the ARCA Menard Series has competed at the track in all but one season since the facility opened in 2006. Yet, since the racetrack opened in 2006, and was acquired by NASCAR in 2013, placing a Cup Series race at the venue had yet to materialize – until June 16, 2024.
Iowa Speedway is the latest new venue added to a season schedule as NASCAR continues making bold moves with its schedule, entering new markets and engaging new audiences with its premier series, the sanctioning body brought the Cup Series to the streets of downtown Chicago earlier this year and began its season with an exhibition race on a temporary oval inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 2022.
Now NASCAR is bringing a Cup Series race to Iowa Speedway’s 7/8ths-mile tri-oval, considered one of the most challenging short tracks in the country. The race will feature the best drivers in the world vying for a ‘win-and-you’re-in’ berth to the Cup Series Playoffs.
“This is a dream come true,” said NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, Iowa Speedway’s co-founder and designer. “This track was built with the intent of hosting a NASCAR Cup Series race one day, and to finally see it come together is a testament to the tenacity of the great race fans in Iowa.”
The action will begin on Friday, June 14 with the ARCA Menards Series, continuing on Saturday, June 15 with the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and concluding on Sunday, June 16 with the NASCAR Cup Series.
Of the drivers projected to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series next year, 19 have won at Iowa Speedway in other NASCAR national and touring series, including Brad Keselowski, who joined NASCAR and state dignitaries for the announcement Tuesday on the Iowa State Capitol steps.
“For years, the Iowa community has patiently waited for the NASCAR Cup Series to come to town,” said Keselowski. “It is with great pleasure for all of the racing community to announce they will finally see that dream come together. Iowa truly is a hotbed for motorsports fans, I saw that enthusiasm firsthand in 2009 for the inaugural NASCAR Xfinity Series race, and can’t wait to see the atmosphere on race day in 2024.”
On-sale ticket information for the first-ever Cup Series Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway will be announced in the near future. Today, fans can put down a $25 deposit for priority access to purchase tickets before the public on-sale at iowaspeedway.com.

Finalists Named for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest
(Clive, Iowa) September 29, 2023 – Following a record high of more than 9,000 nominations, the prestigious title of “Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin” is down to just five restaurants. The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is nearing the conclusion of its 21st annual Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest.
The winner will be announced as part of National Pork Month, aka Porktober, a monthlong celebration of the pork industry that takes place each year in October.
The top five restaurants this year, listed alphabetically, are:
· Cliff’s Place – Manning
· Spillway Supper Club – Harpers Ferry
· Stumpy’s Bar & Grill – Duncombe
· ToJo’s Bar & Grill – Jamaica
· The Roadhouse – Orange City
A total of 774 restaurants were nominated this year.
“It’s exciting to see such an overwhelming response from Iowans who love breaded pork tenderloins,” said Kelsey Sutter, marketing and programs director for IPPA. “There certainly isn’t a shortage of restaurants serving them up!”
To qualify, pork tenderloins must be hand-breaded or battered. A traditional tenderloin starts with a pounded-out slice of pork loin that’s dredged through flour, eggs, milk, breadcrumbs, or crushed crackers. The meat is then fried to a crispy, golden brown and served on a bun.
The Iowa restaurant serving them needs to be open year-round and offer the sandwich as a regular menu item. Food trucks, concession stands, seasonal eateries, and catering businesses are not eligible for the contest.
“The breaded pork tenderloin is an Iowa tradition,” said Linda Schroeder, chair of the IPPA Restaurant and Foodservice Committee. “Winning Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest is an exemplary honor, and that recognition will last forever!”
Judging of the top 40 restaurants took place this summer. That list included the five restaurants with the most nominations in each of IPPA’s eight districts, which helps ensure statewide representation.
IPPA members and industry affiliates anonymously visited those locations and scored the tenderloins based on pork taste and quality, physical characteristics, and presentation.
IPPA’s Restaurant and Foodservice Committee reviewed those 40 evaluations and selected the five contenders to advance to the next round. That same committee appointed a panel of three judges to travel to each of the finalists to determine the first and second place winners.
The winning restaurant will receive $500, a plaque, a banner to display, and statewide publicity that will drive new business. The runner-up is awarded $250 and a plaque from IPPA.
First-place restaurants are not allowed to compete for five years afterward.
Winners from the past five years:
2022 –- Lid’s Bar & Grill, Waukon
2021 — Victoria Station, Harlan (closed)
2020 — PrairieMoon On Main, Prairieburg
2019 — The Pub at the Pinicon, New Hampton
2018 — Three C’s Diner, Corning

Iowa Pork enters NIL agreement with Iowa State football players Purchase, Moore, Hamann, Bacon
Check out this NIL agreement with Iowa State football and the Iowa Pork Producers!
(Clive, Iowa) September 25, 2023 – The Iowa Pork Producers Association is partnering with four Iowa State University football players to promote the pork industry. Through an NIL (name, image, likeness) deal, Cyclones Myles Purchase, Tyler Moore, Tommy Hamann, and Caleb Bacon are leading the new “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” marketing campaign. The goal is obviously to push Iowans to buy pork products. More specifically, they want you to purchase more ham and bacon.
“After the ‘Hamann Bacon’ photo went viral on social media following the Cyclones’ season opener, we knew we had to jump on this opportunity,” said Trish Cook, president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. “These four young men are not only great football players, they also have strong academic records, and great last names! We couldn’t be more excited to work with them in this fun initiative to publicize Iowa pork.”
October is National Pork Month, aka Porktober, and this promotion will be part of that monthlong celebration. The Iowa Pork Producers Association will run ads on social media featuring the four players surrounded by delicious Iowa pork and strategically using their names to encourage pork consumption.
In conjunction with the NIL partnership, the Iowa Pork Producers Association will donate $1,000 of pork to each player’s food pantry of choice.
“Iowa pork producers and pig farmers care about their communities, and while this partnership is a fun way to promote our industry, it’s also one way we can give back,” Cook said. “Food insecurity remains an issue for many people and we’re glad to partner with these Cyclone football players to help their local food pantries.”
Myles Purchase, Tyler Moore, and Caleb Bacon were all named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2022. Tommy Hamann was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2022. The Iowa Pork Producers Association is pleased to work with these student-athletes to promote pork and the work of Iowa pig farmers, while aiding local communities.
“It’s something unique and it feels good to be able to do something for a good cause,” said Cyclones Defensive Back Myles Purchase, a junior from Denver, CO.
“It’s a really crazy way to incorporate all of our names and I think it’s a great way to promote Iowa pork producers too,” said Cyclone Tight End Tyler Moore, a redshirt sophomore from Des Moines.
When the picture of Tommy Hamann and Caleb Bacon together on the field went viral on social media, the players had several friends sharing the photo with them.
“I think it’s just hilarious being able to use play-on words on our last names in a super clever way to promote Iowa pork and it’s just an all-around great opportunity to bring us all together,” said Hamann, a redshirt freshman defensive end for the Iowa State Cyclones.
Caleb Bacon has heard jokes about his last name for much of his life. “People said I should take advantage of it, and it just came to fruition in that picture. I think it’s just good for our teammates and I’d like to thank the Iowa pork producers for the opportunity.” Bacon is a sophomore linebacker from Lake Mills, Iowa.
Iowa is the number one state in the nation for pork production and nearly 150,000 Iowans are employed by the pork industry.

EVERYTHING NICE ABOUT PUMPKIN SPICE
With fall officially arriving tomorrow, for some, it’s the most wonderful time of the year: Pumpkin Spice season. And if you’re one of those people who want pumpkin spice in everything from your Oreos to your…pumpkin spice…here’s some good news: The spices that are mixed together to create pumpkin spice each have their own health benefits. That’s right: Pumpkin spice is actually pretty good for you. The flavor is generally made up of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice. Cinnamon is thought to help control blood sugar levels, nutmeg has been used to treat many afflictions, including cancer and kidney disease, but more research is needed. Ginger seems to be an effective treatment for nausea and morning sickness. Cloves are used to treat toothaches, and allspice is good for things like intestinal gas, diarrhea, flu and colds. And let’s not forget pumpkin. While it isn’t actually an ingredient in ALL pumpkin spice products, if it is used, you’re in luck. Pumpkin is high in vitamin A, which is good for your eyes, skin, and fighting infections.

Georgia Dentist Has World’s Largest Toothpaste Collection
A Georgia dentist earned a Guinness World Records title for his collection of 2,037 different toothpaste tubes, with unusual flavors including wasabi and whiskey. Dr. Val Kolpakov, who practices dentistry in Alpharetta, said his collection includes rare toothpastes from countries including Japan, Korea, China, India and Russia. “I started my collection in 2001 to learn more as a dentist about all available toothpastes on the market,” Kolpakov told Guinness World Records. “Soon I realized that this is a very interesting hobby and tried to collect some old toothpastes and tubes from other countries.” Kolpakov said some of the most unusual tubes displayed at his dental practice’s “mini museum” include a trio of whiskey-flavored tubes in rye, scotch and bourbon varieties. He said the novelty toothpastes, manufactured by Don Poynter in the 1950s, contain 3% alcohol. Kolpakov said he also has a wasabi-flavored toothpaste, but he has no plans to try it.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission Just Dropped Its First Album
The federal agency responsible for promoting the safety of consumer products has employed plenty of tactics over the years, from recalls to regulations to PSAs. Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is trying a new — and catchier — approach: It’s released an album. We’re Safety Now Haven’t We packs in six genre-spanning, safety-focused songs (seven if you count the one that also got a Spanglish version). There’s an EDM banger about wearing helmets, a K-pop number about firework safety, and even a reggaeton track about smoke alarms. The artists are officially anonymous.

Caitlin Clark Named Winner of 93rd AAU James E. Sullivan Award
NEW YORK — Senior guard from the University of Iowa, Caitlin Clark, was named the winner of the 93rd AAU James E. Sullivan Award on Tuesday, presented annually since 1930 to the most outstanding athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level in the United States.
The winner is determined by AAU Sullivan Award Committee, AAU Board of Directors, sports media, and past winners. Former Iowa Wrestler, Spencer Lee, is the only other Hawkeye to win the award in school history (2019).
“I am incredibly humbled,” Clark said. “It is an honor to be selected for this prestigious award that elects a student-athlete that excels on the court and in the classroom. All the finalists are equally as deserving. It is special to represent the University of Iowa on this stage.”
Clark also won the 2023 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year Award, Honda Cup and was named Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year as by THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA). She also won the 2023 Naismith, Wooden and Wade Trophies along with the Associated Press and USBWA Ann Drysdale Player of the Year honors.
She is also a two-time winner of the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award and is the first-ever three-time winner of the Dawn Staley Award. She also won the Honda Sport Award for Basketball in April.
Clark led her team to its first-ever NCAA Championship game and helped post the Hawkeye’s most wins in a single season. During the NCAA Tournament, she posted the first 40-point triple-double in NCAA Tournament history (men’s or women’s) and broke the NCAA single-tournament records for most 3-point FG made (24) and most points scored (191). This season, she is the only player in the nation with 1,000 points, 240 rebounds, 310 assists and 45 steals.
Overall, Clark became the first player in Division I women’s basketball history to record more than 1,000 points and 300 assists in the same season and was fastest Division I player (men’s or women’s) to reach 1,500 career points over the last 20 seasons.
Off the court, she is a two-time First Team Academic All-American and was named the 2023 CSC Academic All-America of the Year.
In addition to athletic excellence, the AAU Sullivan Award aims to recognize the qualities of leadership, citizenship, character, and sportsmanship on and off the field.
“Caitlin Clark is the epitome of what this award represents,” said Jo Mirza, AAU President. “We’re honored to have her name forever entwined with the AAU Sullivan Award and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.”
The other finalists for the award included baseball player Dylan Crews, Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, University of Tennessee swimmer Jordan Crooks, Olympic swimmer Kate Douglass, and Purdue basketball center Zach Edey.
Clark is the eighth basketball player to take home the AAU Sullivan Award in its 93-year history. Previous winners include Sabrina Ionescu (2019), Breanna Stewart (2015), J.J. Redick (2005), and Bill Walton (1973).

More Bear Invasions From Across The USA
Remember that three legged bear that broke into a Florida home and drank all of the White Claws from the fridge??
A California woman who came home to find her house had been broken into says she knew immediately it wasn’t the work of a sneaky cat burglar, but instead the act of a bear burglar.
Chelsea Mapanda of Sierra Madre noticed her side door was open and called 911. But after looking through the kitchen window and seeing the refrigerator door open and food scattered all over the floor, she knew it had to be a hungry bear in the house. She says, “I automatically knew that a bear was in my house because we had been alerted that a bear was around.” The hungry intruder helped himself to fresh honey and mangoes.
Police were sent to the house and confirmed there was a bear inside. They secured the area around the house and waited for the Department of Fish and Wildlife to arrive to help get the bear out, but the well-fed intruder found his own way out before they arrived. Chelsea later called it a “fun” invasion and said, “I’m very chaotic so this situation fits me.”
And that’s not it, A mama black bear and her cub in Alaska broke into a Krispy Kreme delivery van as it was dropping off products to a store.

NORTHEAST IOWA INVITED TO WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 IN DECORAH
We had an opportunity to talk with Lauren Livingston from The Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter about the Walk To End Alzheimer’s happening Saturday in Decorah. Hear our conversation below.
The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Northeast Iowa area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Decorah City Hall.
The Alzheimer’s Association and its volunteers and walk participants are fighting for a different future. For families facing the disease today, for more time, for treatments. Alzheimer’s research is closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s, but to get there, the Alzheimer’s Association needs Northern Iowa to join them for the world’s largest fundraiser to fight the disease.
There is no fee to register for Walk, however, all participants are encouraged to raise critical funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support and advance research toward methods of prevention, treatment and, ultimately, a cure.
On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with Promise Garden flowers which signify our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers – purple, yellow, blue and orange – represent the different reasons why people walk to end this disease.
We’re closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s,” said Walk Manager, Christine Hess. “We hope that everyone in the community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
In Iowa alone, there are more than 66,000 people living with the disease and 98,000 caregivers.
To register and receive the latest updates on this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, visit alz.org/walk.

Electronic Construction Sign In Texas Flashes Offensive Message
Motorists in Houston did a double take on the road earlier this week when an electronic construction sign flashed a strange and offensive message at them.
Drivers saw the sign which first read, “Due to the weather,” and were shocked when it then flashed “Go [expletive] yourself.” Some were able to snap photos of the messages and shared them on social media. The sign apparently displayed the message for several hours before a city inspector showed up and shut it down. Houston Public Works said they do not operate the sign and are investigating who may have been able to access the controls which are locked inside a box.

FEMA and FCC Plan Nationwide Emergency Alert Test for Oct. 4, 2023
Test Messages Will be Sent to All TVs, Radios and Cell Phones
WASHINGTON — FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this fall.
The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 1:20 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. This will be the third nationwide test, but the second test to all cellular devices. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless handset.
The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions. This will be the seventh nationwide EAS test.
FEMA and the FCC are coordinating with EAS participants, wireless providers, emergency managers and other stakeholders in preparation for this national test to minimize confusion and to maximize the public safety value of the test.
The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.
The WEA portion of the test will be initiated using FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), a centralized internet-based system administered by FEMA that enables authorities to send authenticated emergency messages to the public through multiple communications networks. The WEA test will be administered via a code sent to cell phones.
This year the EAS message will be disseminated as a Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) message via the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System-Open Platform for Emergency Networks (IPAWS-OPEN).
All wireless phones should receive the message only once. The following can be expected from the nationwide WEA test:
- Beginning at approximately 1:20 p.m. CST, cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message.
- For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
- Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”
WEA alerts are created and sent by authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial government agencies through IPAWS to participating wireless providers, which deliver the alerts to compatible handsets in geo-targeted areas. To help ensure that these alerts are accessible to the entire public, including people with disabilities, the alerts are accompanied by a unique tone and vibration.
Important information about the EAS test:
- The EAS portion of the test is scheduled to last approximately one minute and will be conducted with the participation of radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers and wireline video providers.
- The test message will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages with which the public is familiar. It will state: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 1:20 to 1:50 hours CST. This is only a test. No action is required by the public
Reminder: On Wednesday, October 4th, at 2:20 p.m. ET, we will conduct a nationwide emergency alert test in coordination with the @FCC.
The test helps ensure that systems are operational to warn the public about emergencies if and when they happen.

Three-Legged Bear Broke Into Home and Chugged Three White Claws
A three-legged bear broke into a Florida family’s enclosed porch and helped itself to three White Claws from the fridge. Josaury Faneite-Diglio said her 13-year-old son, Joseph Diglio, was inside their Lake Mary home when the family dog’s barking alerted him to a bear outside. Security camera footage and cellphone video recorded by Joseph shows the three-legged bear, known to neighbors as Tripod, breaking through the screen into the home’s lanai. “He ate the fish food we had outside next to our fish tank and then proceeded to the bar,” Faneite-Diglio told WESH-TV. “He took three White Claws, drank, and left very happy. His favorite flavor is mango and strawberry.” Joseph said seeing the bear open the fridge spurred him to lock the doors of the house in case Tripod went looking for more snacks. The family said the bear left after a few minutes, with the only damage being the stolen snacks and a hole in the screen.
