Each States Favorite Romantic Comedy
With Valentines Day closing in fast, Comparitech compiled research from Google Trends to find out each states favorite romantic comedy. Iowa’s favorite rom-com is “The Philadelphia Story”. Over in Wisconsin the favorite is “Bringing Up Baby”. The favorite rom-com in Minnesota is “His Girl Friday”. Check out more details about their research below.
The majority of these rom-coms are from the past four decades, but there are also a handful of older classics that have made it to the top.
- His Girl Friday – Popular in Michigan, Minnesota, and North Carolina, His Girl Friday was released in 1940. It’s a screwball comedy featuring Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant who play ex-husband and -wife. Grant (a newspaper editor called Walter Burns) tries to stop Russell (an investigative reporter called Hildy Johnson) from settling into domestic life with her new fiancé.
- Roman Holiday – A must-see in Virginia, Roman Holiday is a 1953 classic starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. The movie sees Hepburn, a princess, running away to explore Rome before falling in love with American news reporter, Peck.
- Bringing Up Baby – Loved by those in Wisconsin, Bringing Up Baby is our oldest featured film. Released in 1938, it’s another screwball comedy with Cary Grant. But this one also features Katharine Hepburn as impulsive heiress, Susan Vance, who turns straightlaced scientist Huxley’s (Grant) world upside down.
A few states favored movies that were shot in their own backyard, including:
- Alaska for The Proposal: Starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, The Proposal sees Margaret (Bullock), a New York editor, trying to convince Andrew (Reynolds) to marry her so he can receive a promotion (and she can fight off her imminent deportation to Canada). However, a trip to Andrew’s hometown (in Alaska), offers up a few surprises.
- California for Clueless: This coming-of-age movie which is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma has stood the test of time. Rich high-school girl, Cher (Alicia Silverstone), is coming to terms with adolescence and all it entails while helping a new student gain popularity.
- Illinois for Sixteen Candles: An 80s classic and another coming-of-age movie, Sixteen Candles stars Molly Ringwald who plays Samantha. Samantha’s parents ignore her, and her private quiz answer ends up in the wrong hands, making her “sweet” 16 becomes anything but.
- New York for When Harry Met Sally: Released in 1989, this iconic film features Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, and that infamous fake orgasm. It’s based on two college friends who try to figure out how they feel about one another when they are reunited several years after graduation.
- Pennsylvania for Silver Linings Playbook: The most modern movie of this bunch, Silver Linings Playbook is adapted from Matthew Quick’s novel. Featuring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (who won an Academy Award for her role), it follows Pat’s (Cooper) journey as he meets Tiffany (Lawrence) and tries to reconnect with his estranged wife.
- Washington for 10 Things I Hate About You: Based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, this rom-com from the late 90s stars Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger.

Dunkaroos Are Coming Coming Back!
It you grew up in the 90’s, you probably remember the snack Dunk-A-Roos! I remember having them occasional, and they were delicious! If you don’t remember, the cookies are made in a variety of shapes, the most common being a circle with an uppercase “D” in the center. The cookies are meant to be dunked into the icing before eating. According to General Mills, they are coming back this summer sometime. They debuted in 1988, and went away in 2000.

The Dangerous Cold of January 2019
Walking to the station this morning it was a little cold…..not as cold as last year at this time. Not even close! The National Weather Service looks back at the dangerous cold at the end of January 2019.
“A dangerously cold arctic air mass settled across the Upper Mississippi River Valley for the end of January 2019, in the wake of a winter storm that brought several inches of snow a day earlier.
The record-breaking cold (coldest since 1996) moved in Monday afternoon (the 28th), with the temperatures dropping below zero by early evening. Temperatures would not climb above zero (0 deg F) until later Friday morning (Feb 1st) – one of the longest stretches of sub-zero temperatures on record.
What made this air more dangerous, to deadly, was the addition of strong, gusty winds. Northwest winds were on the increase by early morning on the 29th (Tuesday), blowing from 15 to 25 mph with gusts upwards of 40 through that day. Wind chills from -30 to -60 F resulted. Winds would diminish a bit Wednesday (30th), eventually becoming light that night.
Low temperatures bottomed out around 30 below for most Wednesday morning. Even colder readings were observed Thursday morning as clear skies and light winds allowed temperatures to fall to -40 or colder in some areas.
Most schools closed through the week, first for the snow storm on Monday, then for the dangerous cold Tuesday through Thursday. A state of emergency was declared for Wednesday, Jan.30th by the Wisconsin Governor resulting in many businesses being closed and suspension of postal services. Tragically, the cold also resulted in some loss of life.”
Take a look at the dangerous wind chills from a year ago.

Dolly Parton sparks a new online trend
Dolly Parton made a post on social media earlier this week that has sparked a new online trend.
On Tuesday (1/21), Dolly shared four different photos of herself on social media, labeling each separate one “LinkedIn,” “Facebook,” “Instagram” and “Tinder.”
Each photo shows a different side of Dolly, which she says corresponds to that particular social media site.
For example, Parton’s “LinkedIn” photo shows her dressed up in business attire, while the “Tinder” picture shows her dressed up as a Playboy bunny.
Dolly’s caption for the photo collage said, “Get you a woman who can do it all.”
Dolly’s post has inspired other people to share similar pictures of themselves online, and even celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Garner have taken part in the trend.

Sweethearts are back for Valentines Day
Sweethearts(or know also as conversation hearts), the pastel candy hearts with romantic messages that have become synonymous with Valentine’s Day, are back after the beloved candy was absent last year after it changed ownership to Spangler Candy. But there will be a few changes. The printer that gave Sweethearts their trademark romantic quips wasn’t working consistently and the new printer was damaged, which means that this year’s crop of hearts will have less to say than usual. The candy may also taste a little different after Spangler found the original recipe for Sweethearts in old paperwork. Necco had modified the formula and flavors over Sweethearts’ 118-year history, and Spangler is excited to bring back the Original flavors, including banana and wintergreen.

Super Bowl Announces Anthem and Halftime Performers
Super Bowl LIV (54) on Feb. 2 will feature a halftime performance by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, with Demi Lovato singing the national anthem during the pre-game festivities.
A country artist has not headlined the Super Bowl halftime show since Shania Twain pumped “Up!” the crowd in 2003 with Sting and No Doubt. That’s 17 years of twang-less performances for the more than 100 millions U.S. viewers that tune in each year.
If you go back to 1994, the halftime show–which was themed Rockin’ Country Sunday–featured Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt and the Judds.
If you want a really fun fact, Doug Kershaw was one of the performers during the 1990 Super Bowl. Doug had a handful of Top 20 hits on the country charts in the 1950s and 60s with his brother Rusty as the duo Rusty & Doug.
Luke Bryan performed the national anthem at Super Bowl LI in 2017. In case you were wondering, past anthem performers with a country connection include Charley Pride (1974), Garth Brooks (1993), Faith Hill (2000), Dixie Chicks (2003) and Carrie Underwood (2010).

Keep Your Fork Story
Here is the story Kathy read this morning, just in case you missed it.
There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things in order, she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.
She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.
“There’s one more thing,” she said excitedly.
“What’s that?” came the Pastor’s reply.
“This is very important,” the young woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.”
The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say.
“That surprises you, doesn’t it?” the young woman asked.
“Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,” said the Pastor.
The young woman explained. “My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork.’ It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming…like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!”
So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder “What’s with the fork?” Then I want you to tell them: “Keep your fork ..the best is yet to come.”
The Pastor’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman goodbye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She knew that something better was coming.
At the funeral people were walking by the young woman’s casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, “What’s with the fork?” And over and over he smiled.
During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.
He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.

Martina McBride Pens Remembrance After Death of Her Mom
Martina McBride’s mother, Jeanne Schiff, 84, passed away on Jan. 10 in Andover, Kan., after emergency heart surgery.
Martina shared the news in a heartfelt Facebook post:
“My mom passed away this morning. She was a complex and amazing woman. Strong. Chic. No-nonsense. Hilarious. Witty. She had the prettiest hair and skin and hands…I loved her hands. She took good care of us. Our house was always the house where all the aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered, and she was really the reason for that. She made her 4 kids self sufficient, told us to go outside and play, gave us chores to do and taught us how to work. She wasn’t one to smother you with affection, do your homework for you, or attend every ballgame, but we always knew she was there for us. As we all got older we had many conversations about life, faith, morals, health, and the importance of getting your beauty sleep. She’d start every phone call or message with ‘Martina. This is your mother.’ She loved to laugh and to tell stories to get a laugh. And even though she told me in the hospital that she wasn’t an enthusiastic cook she made the best fried chicken I’ve ever tasted. I spent the last week with her in ICU, with my dad, my brothers, and my sister, and a fantastic and caring team of doctors who went above and beyond to try and get her to a place where her heart would sustain her. During that week I held her hand, rubbed her shoulders, stroked her face, told her I loved her and she told me she loved me. Even though I wish it had ended differently I wouldn’t have traded that time with her for anything. So now we try and move forward without our matriarch. And somehow, in time, we will. Because she taught us how to be strong. I love you Mom. 1/10/20
Jeanne is survived by her husband of 54 years, Daryl Martin Schiff, three siblings, four children, 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Jan. 15, 2020 in Medicine Lodge, Kan. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School in care of the funeral home.

Putting the Awful in Waffle
A California family is feeling pretty batter-ed after opening a Christmas package that promised a brand new waffle maker — but delivered a nasty old appliance with a previous owner’s leftovers inside.
Brian McCarthy, a Los Angeles-based photographer, hit up Twitter the day after Christmas to express his dismay about the situation, saying, “Wow, my mom sent my daughter a new waffle maker from @amazon and they sent us a used one with the FOOD STILL IN IT. Disgusting!”
McCarthy accepted apologies from both Amazon and the waffle maker’s manufacturer, and said he plans to buy the same item, but this time he’ll purchase it from a brick-and-mortar store. (New York Post)
