Make a kid’s Halloween … Not all kids get to experience the fun of Halloween — but you can help change that. There’s an awesome charity called Weendream that donates costumes to kids all over the U.S. According to their site, “Weendream gives costumes to kids from all over America who are faced with unique challenges, including those with special needs, physical and/or mental disabilities, homeless children, kids living in poverty or at shelters, children with serious medical issues, kids in the foster care system, and kids who have experienced a recent trauma or natural disaster.” You can donate costumes, make a monetary donation, and more. Just check out their website for ways to help. There are a number of other charities, including Halloween Helpers and the Ronald McDonald House Charities that also help provide costumes for kids.

The time has come to indulge in Halloween Candy!  The folks at Zippa broke down some research from Google Trends and found out each states favorite Halloween Candy.

In Minnesota and Wisconsin Twix is the favorite, while in Iowa the Tootsie pop is on top.

Here’s some more interesting info they found out….

• Last year’s favorite Starburst was dethroned by Kit Kats and Twix bars.
• Halloween staple and not tasty candy Candy Corn is loved best in West Virginia.
• The winner is in, and between chocolate and non-chocolate candy, chocolate narrowly win.
• 28 states prefer chocolates candies while 22 prefer gummies, fruit-flavored candies, and other non-chocolate candies.
• Shout out to Ohio for knowing Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the TRUE reason for the season.
• If you ever wondered who likes those little orange and black wrapped candies deceptively titled “peanut butter kisses,” the answer is, while not their favorite, South Dakota likes them best.

DECORAH, Iowa – The Luther College and Briar Cliff University baseball teams are excited to announce they will be the first collegiate teams to play on the iconic Field of Dreams original movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. This historic game will be held on Sept. 16, 2022.

Briar Cliff University secured this opportunity and invited Luther College as their opponent. “We are so excited that our student-athletes, along with Briar Cliff’s, will be the first collegiate players to take the Field of Dreams—a field like none other, known to inspire and evoke emotions,” said Renae Hartl, director of intercollegiate athletics at Luther College. “We are so thankful that Briar Cliff University thought enough of our institution, athletic program, and the people in it, to include us in this memorable event.”

The Field of Dreams became a notable landmark in Iowa after the movie was released in 1989. Released by Universal Pictures, the movie starred Kevin Costner and became an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture of the Year. Major League Baseball hosted a Yankees vs. White Sox game at the site in August this year, the first-ever regular-season game to be played in Iowa. The game included special guest Costner himself and drew over 5.9 million viewers. The game between Briar Cliff University and Luther College on Sept. 16 will take place at the actual movie site.

“Playing on the Field of Dreams is something our players probably never thought they would get the chance to do. As they run out onto that iconic field and feel their spikes dig into the dirt, this game will undoubtedly bring out emotions and bring them back to the reasons they play baseball, a sport that has created so many opportunities for all of us, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is no different,” said Bryan Nikkel, head baseball coach at Luther College.

While the focus is on creating a memorable experience for the student-athletes, Nikkel says this will be more than a baseball game. “We want it to be a celebration for the student-athletes, alumni and friends and family of the program. It’s an opportunity to showcase both colleges and both programs, while at the same time, gather together to enjoy the moment.”

“To paraphrase an oft-repeated line from the movie, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ Briar Cliff is proud to go to the Field of Dreams,” said Corby McGlauflin, Briar Cliff University head baseball coach, “and we are thrilled to help make this dream come true for our students, fans and alumni.” Luther College ended its 2021 spring season with a record of 32-16 and the Norse made their sixth appearance in the NCAA III National Tournament. The Briar Cliff Chargers ended its 2021 spring season with a 34-20 record.

Ticket availability will be announced at a later date.

The “Field of Dreams” site in Iowa, where the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees played the “Field of Dreams Game” in August, has been bought by a group headed by baseball Hall of Famer FRANK THOMAS. Thomas was at the site yesterday, where the 1989 movie ‘Field of Dreams’ was filmed, to announce that he and his business partners had purchased a controlling stake in the site. Thomas said, “On the heels of last month’s successful Field of Dreams game . . . the time is right.”

Police in Wisconsin are trying to locate a $1,400 bronze sculpture of the nursery rhyme character Humpty Dumpty sitting on a toilet. The Madison Police Department said the sculpture, called, “Dumpty Humpty,” was stolen from an Art Fair on the Square vendor’s booth on Saturday. Police say they have security footage of two men who might be responsible for taking the sculpture.

The Iowa town of Centerville cooked 14,280 pancakes to take the Guinness World Record.  About 100 volunteers who represented numerous local businesses cooked up storm of flapjacks from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to take the record.  The previous record for the largest serving of pancakes was 13,000.  Check out the full story from UPI here.

ALAN JACKSON has revealed that he’s living with a degenerative nerve condition that’s impacting his ability to tour and perform. During an interview on NBC’s ‘Today’ show yesterday, Jackson said he has a rare condition known as “CMT” (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disorder), which is related to muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease.

Alan says that him coming forward and revealing what he’s dealing with medically, has a lot to do with his live performances. He doesn’t want fans to get the wrong idea if they see that something not just right when Alan’s on stage.

A contractor was caught on camera destroying a new bathroom he’d worked on due to a dispute over $4,000. The video showing Terry Gregory of Home Remodels swinging a sledgehammer and knocking new tiling and fixtures from the shower walls while yelling.

Homeowner Amber Trucke says she paid $3,330 of an owed $7,555. The contractor sent her a Facebook pay request for the balance last Friday and said she had to pay by that evening. Trucke says she asked to see the finished product, get receipts proving they’d ordered a shower door they needed to install, and ensure water would flow properly through the plumbing before paying. But on Saturday morning, the contractor demanded payment, and showed up to cause destruction. Trucke wrote on Facebook, “[Because] I didn’t pay in 23 hours . . . they showed up like thugs and destroyed my property.”

The official trailer for the Kurt Warner bio-pic “American Underdog” was released yesterday.  The movie stars Zachary Levi as Kurt Warner, and Dennis Quad as Dick Vermeil, who was head coach of the St. Louis Rams at the time.  The movie hits theaters this Christmas!

A Walmart worker named Beth McGrath has gone viral after posting a video on Facebook [warning: includes expletives] of her quitting her job – via the store loud speaker. She even prefaced her rant with the “Attention Walmart shoppers” opening. “My name is Beth from electronics,” she said, “I’ve been working at Walmart for almost five years and I can say that everyone here is overworked and underpaid. She went on to complain about everything from low wages to managers treating employees like crap – particularly older employees. She also called her store manager a “pervert” and praised her fellow employees. She ended with “eff management and eff this job. I quit.”

Responding to the reaction to her Facebook post, McGrath said in a new video: “I never intended for the video to blow up the way it did. It’s been an emotional roller coaster for me and I’m just at a loss for words. I didn’t record the video for clout. I recorded the video for my fellow coworkers, to let them know that I do love them and I do want what’s best for them. I wanted to be their voice, I wanted to be my voice. I am overwhelmed by everyone’s support. If I had any advice from this it would be to say, do not be afraid to speak your peace, even if it tears you down first.”

However, the threat for damaging winds and a tornado depend on how quickly clouds can clear ahead of the front, and confidence in these hazards is on the lower side. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely. The storms move in from west to east during the afternoon and likewise clear from west to east in the late evening and overnight hours on Monday.

NASCAR will hold the opening exhibition for the 2022 season inside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, it was announced on Fox Sports last night. It’s a big move for the annual, invitation only race, called The Clash, which has been held at Daytona International Speedway since 1979. Additionally, the exhibition race, which was always held the week before the season-opening Daytona 500, will be on February 6th, two weeks before the Daytona 500 and one week before the Super Bowl.

A company is seeking a horror fan to get paid $1,300 to watch 13 creepy classics and monitor their heart rate to compare the fear factors of high- and low-budget films.

FinanceBuzz, a financial advice website, announced it is seeking a “Horror Movie Heart Rate Analyst” to watch 13 horror films with varying budgets and compare the scares from big-budget movies to their low-budget counterparts.

The chosen candidate will use a FitBit device to track heart rates while watching the movies.

The films selected by the website are Amityville Horror, A Quiet Place, A Quiet Place Part 2, Candyman, Insidious, The Blair Witch Project, Sinister, Get Out, The Purge, Paranormal Activity and the 2018 remake of Halloween.

“The lucky candidate hired for this ghostly gig will be paid $1,300 for their efforts. We’ll also provide a FitBit to wear during their movie marathon and a $50 gift card to cover the cost of movie rentals,” the website said.

Applications are being accepted through Sept. 26. The winning candidate will be announced Oct. 1.

A stray cat got into Hard Rock Stadium during the Miami Hurricanes football game and fell from the upper deck. Luckily fans were able to catch it using an American flag . . . the cat is OK.  Here’s the video.

Animal control officers in Maryland say three exotic animals are on the loose and haven’t been spotted in days — because they’re not spotted… they’re striped.

A group of escaped zebras broke loose from their owner’s property and have been roaming the area around Prince George’s County for several days. Some of the zebras have been lured into an enclosure and successfully captured, but three remain on the loose. Local residents have been asked to stay away from the animals if they happen to see them because the zebras could get spooked and then run onto a busy road or highway.

DECORAH, – The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held in Decorah on Saturday, Sept. 18, and participants have the option to walk from home or join us at Decorah City Hall. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk will kick-off at 9 a.m.

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with Promise Garden flowers which signify our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers – purple, yellow, blue and orange – represent the different reasons why people walk to end this disease. 

This year, the Alzheimer’s Association has a goal of raising $25,000 at the Decorah Walk. The money raised will help the Association provide care and support to families in Iowa, while also advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and ultimately a cure.

The health and safety of the participants, volunteers and staff are the top priorities. We ask that all Walk attendees be vaccinated against COVID-19 or wear a mask, per CDC guidelines around large outdoor events. Masks will be available on-site.

Today is a big day…It’s “Toilet Paper Day”! Of Course we had the toilet paper shortage of 2020…but remember when Johnny Carson caused a toilet paper shortage in 1973? Johnny joked about about a toilet paper shortage going on, but there was no toilet paper shortage.  Soon after Johnny delivered his joke people ran out to the stores to stock up!

This could be your week to ride in the iconic Wienermobile. Hot dog maker Oscar Mayer’s distinctive vehicle is available on the Lyft app this week, but only for a select few in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Between today and Friday, riders in those cities who request a Lyft XL could be matched with the 27-foot-long hot dog instead. You won’t know if the Wienermobile is coming until it arrives, but you will get a call confirming how many people are in your group. The lucky riders will also get the free swag Oscar Mayer is giving away like T-shirts, hot dog masks, and Weenie Whistles shaped like the Wienermobile, and their ride will be free.

Febreze has come up with a new way to fool your guests into thinking you actually clean house: A “scratch ‘n sniff” fabric spray. Using their “breakthrough touch-activated scent technology,” Febreze is rolling out “Unstopables Touch Fabric Spray”. As you know, with regular Febreze spray (which isn’t going anywhere), you can spray all you like, but once that ocean breeze scent dissipates, you’re left with the usual smell of wet dog and last night’s fish dinner. The new Febreze Touch supposedly stores its scent in fabrics. The idea is that you spray the couch, pillows, curtains, any soft fabric, and the fresh smell re-emerges every time they are touched. A press release from Proctor & Gamble says to “Think scratch ‘n sniff, taken to the next level”.

As uncertainty about current COVID situations affect all forms of life, Florida Georgia Line has announced that out of an abundance of caution they are canceling the remainder of their I Love My Country tour due to COVID-19.

We’ll never forget the shocking amount rain the tri-states received 14 years ago.  The National Weather Service La Crosse looks back at the historic rain and flooding….

Rainfall and flooding of historic proportions struck parts of the Upper Mississippi River Valley on Saturday night, August 18th, continuing through Sunday, August 19th. Rainfall in excess of 15 inches fell in some areas, with the main swath of heaviest rain centered along a line from Claremont and Rochester, Minnesota to La Crosse, Viroqua and Muscoda, Wisconsin.  A 24-hour rainfall record was set for the state of Minnesota near Hokah, MN (Houston Co.) with 15.10 inches, while unofficial readings may have exceeded 17″. 

There were numerous mud slides, roads washed out, and flash flooding that killed 7 people. The community of Rushford, MN was flooded by Rush Creek and infrastructure remained damaged for months.  Damage costs likely exceeded $200 Million.
