An exit sign on a Delaware highway was replaced after drivers pointed out on social media that it misspelled the name of the state. Numerous posts appeared on social media this week when the Delaware Avenue exit sign on northbound Interstate 95 in Wilmington was installed and travelers quickly noticed it was spelled “Delware Ave.” The Delaware Department of Transportation said a subcontractor had to make the sign in a hurry because the permanent replacement wasn’t expected to arrive in time for the exit’s reopening this week. They joked in a Facebook post that that typo had been a “test” to see if drivers were paying attention.

Would you drink a beer made using a Christmas tree? Black Husky Brewery in Milwaukee is celebrating the holiday season with a beer made using spruce from the city’s official Christmas tree. It’s called Tree Sproose and the couple who donated the city’s tree even participated in the bottling of the special beer. A portion of sales will go to the Milwaukee Urban Forestry Fund.

Having a 2-year-old in the house, it’s very interesting to hear her expanding vocabulary.  Some words sound clear as a bell, others not so much…”Sprinkles” sounds like “Pickles”, and sometimes I can’t make it out at all.  One word that is sometimes hard for adults to say is “Linoleum”.  Here’s a 10-month-old girl who can’t say “Linoleum” but the results are pretty funny…  -EK

A substitute teacher in Texas was “relieved of duty” after he was recorded performing BRITNEY SPEARS on a karaoke machine he’d brought to class. Video recorded by Bowie High School students showed him belting out “Toxic,” with his one-man concert accompanied by an amateur light show. A spokesperson for the Austin Independent School District confirmed that the substitute was asked to leave after the first-period class Friday because he hadn’t been following the district’s “best practices.” The spokesperson said dryly, “I’ve heard worse Britney Spears covers, but the lights are a bit much.” The teacher found another assignment at Austin High School.  It’s Texas…should have brought in some George Strait karaoke….

People are always out hunting tor the latest trend, but when it comes to Christmas, sometimes older is better.

Southern Living has some ideas for throwback traditions that are primed to return, like:

Tinsel Trees: Live trees have a lot of charm and a great scent, but they don’t shimmer quite like lab-grown silver aluminum ones. They were introduced in the 1950s and peaked in popularity a decade later, but are experiencing a revival.

Christmas Crackers: Not food, but plenty of fun. Christmas crackers livened up meals in the 19th century, when folks placed the brightly-colored tubes at the holiday table. When opened, they’d make a big “crack” noise and split apart to reveal a small toy or paper crown. And who doesn’t like a surprise?

Flocked Spruces: Look at vintage photos from the ’50s and ’60s, and you’ll see trees with “flocking” — or a dusting of artificial snow that clings to the branches (and everything else). It’s inspired by the trees of the 1800s, which were often decorated with sprinkles of flour.

The Yule Log: No, not the one you watch on TV on Christmas morning, the one you eat after dinner. Yule Logs, made of sponge cake and rolled to resemble the rings of a tree, were once one of the most popular holiday desserts. They deserve a comeback!

Twin Cities Orthopedics says a deer made its way into their facility in Stillwater, Minnesota on Tuesday (November 30th). They posted their security camera footage to Facebook, and it shows the animal jumping over desks and running through hallways and a large room with exercise machines in search of an exit. The post notes the deer was returned to the wild safe and sound.

Speaking of struggling to buy for someone … Is it time to end the “Secret Santa” exchange? The Secret Santa exchange is a staple of the holiday season … but it seems most people hate it. A new survey found that 79% of respondents say they hate the exchange because they never know what to get the person whose name they draw. 87% confessed that they have re-gifted items they’ve gotten in Secret Santa exchanges. Those surveyed also named some of the worst Secret Santa gifts they’ve received, including bars of soap, knock-off chia pets, and even random vegetables.

The Rock surprised a theater full of people that had come to watch his movie “Red Notice”.  He gave them free concessions, tequila, energy drinks, ice cream, and one guy scored his personal truck.  The Rock was moved by how Oscar Rodriguez takes care of his 75-year-old mother, is a leader at church, a personal trainer, and a Navy Veteran.

In what some Jack Daniel’s fans would consider a tragedy, the Mufreesboro, Tennessee, Police Department said gallons of the whiskey, worth $400,000, spilled onto an interstate last week. The truck was turning onto the I-24 on-ramp on November 17th when it overturned and the whiskey was seen pouring out. The driver wasn’t injured in the crash. Police say the load of Jack Daniel’s was being shipped to Israel.

A British breeder has taken the concept of rich Thanksgiving food to a whole new level – by selling turkeys for over $300 each! The specially-bred KellyBronze birds, which retail for more than $13 per pound, have been called the “Rolls-Royce of turkeys” and are only available in a handful of U.S. stores. The birds, which roam free on a 2,200-acre farm, grow much more slowly than typical turkeys and are harvested at the age of six months, not the two-and-a-half month lifespan of supermarket turkeys.  New York butcher Jake Dickson says, “They’re probably the best turkeys in the country,” but isn’t sure if they’re worth the price, since he adds, “It’s still turkey. It doesn’t magically turn into prime rib.”

A pastor and his wife discovered a 10-point buck wreaking havoc inside their church in Sturgis, Michigan on Monday. It had broken through a window earlier . . . and after bouncing around here and there, he found his way back outside that same window. (Ironically, it was the state’s opening day of deer hunting season.)

The longest partial lunar eclipse of the century will take place on Friday morning. It will make the moon appear red for up to three and a half hours, with up to 97 percent of the moon slipping into the Earth’s shadow. The best views of the eclipse will be from North America, where it will be visible nearly the entire time as it will be nighttime when it begins. To see it from the U.S., you’ll need to get up early and look low in the west toward daybreak. The farther west you’re located, the better, as the moon will appear much higher from the western part of the continent as opposed to locations farther to the east. It’s nickname is the Beaver Moon lunar eclipse, as it’s happening during November’s full moon.

Carrie Underwood just released “Stretchy Pants” — a fun tribute to holiday overeating.

On November 11, 1940, a rapidly deepening low pressure system moved northeast from Kansas City, MO northeast through the Upper Mississippi River Valley and into the Upper Great Lakes. This low pressure area produced the lowest pressure reading ever recorded up to this time at Charles City, IA (28.92 inches), La Crosse, WI (28.72 inches), and Duluth, MN (28.66 inches).

Armistice Day (now known as Veteran’s Day) began with blue skies and temperatures in the 40s and 50s. The weather forecast for that morning was for colder temperatures and a few flurries. The day was so nice that duck hunters dressed in short-sleeved shirts rushed to the marshes along the Mississippi River early that morning.

During the late morning and early afternoon, a strong cold front moved through the region. Behind this front, the weather became rather blustery and the temperature plunged to the single digits by the next morning. The rain turned to sleet and eventually to driving snow. Twelve duck hunters were trapped on the Mississippi River between St. Paul and Prairie du Chien by gale-force winds and threatening waves. These hunters sought shelter on small islands and eventually froze to death. Rescue work the next day was hindered by ice which had developed during the preceding night.

Elsewhere heavy snow fell across the Dakotas, much of Minnesota and Iowa, and northwest Wisconsin. The greatest snow total was 26.6 inches in Collegeville, MN. In addition, 30 to 50 mph winds caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow which trapped unsuspecting motorists.

Twenty foot drifts were reported near Willmar, MN. The blizzard left 49 dead in Minnesota, and gales on Lake Michigan caused ship wrecks resulting in another 59 deaths. The storm claimed a total of 154 lives, and killed thousands of cattle in Iowa. More than a million turkeys were killed by the storm in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and other states. The storm became know as the “Armistice Day Storm”.

Helping Services for Youth & Families is happy to announce the opening of the 17th annual Holiday Lights event, held at Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah. Holiday Lights is an annual fundraiser for Helping Services for Youth & Families, a nonprofit organization with programs that promote healthier and safer families and youth throughout Northeast Iowa.

Thanks to the help of volunteers and sponsors, Holiday Lights will be ready on Wednesday, November 24th from 5:00 pm to 7:30 p.m. for the Walk-Through Night. This is the only time visitors will be able to walk through to see the lighted displays up close. Parking will be available at the soccer fields on Pulpit Rock Rd with shuttle buses (masks required) to transport visitors into Holiday Lights, or at the Twins Springs side of the campground that connects by a footbridge. Visitors are invited to stroll through the lighted displays and enjoy donated soups, cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. There will be a live nativity hosted by St. Benedict’s Parish, carols performed by local choirs, complimentary photos taken with Santa, and “Pokey Pete” train rides for children.

Following the Walk-through Night, Holiday Lights is open nightly, 5:00 to 9:00 pm, for drive-through visitors starting on Thanksgiving night through Christmas night. Santa will be at Holiday Lights every Friday through Sunday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Returning this year is a fireworks display on Tuesday, December 14, starting at 6:30 p.m. over downtown Decorah. All guests are welcome to enjoy the show in the Decorah High School football stadium.

KYLE LARSON won the NASCAR Cup Series championship yesterday, his first, with a title-winning victory at Phoenix Raceway. It was Larson’s 10th Cup victory of the year, as he returned this season from a nearly year-long suspension. Here’s a Halloween Safety video from 1977 that has some good safety tips, and one very bad one. (The bad one is having a kid write their name, address, and phone number on the candy bag in case there’s an accident. It’s a terrible piece of advice. It gives a predator all the info they need to find the kid AND bring them candy.)

The Spartanburg, South Carolina, Police Department responded after getting a 9-1-1 call about a child stuck in a gutter on Monday and arrived to find fake child legs sticking out of a gutter and the head of a white-faced clown hidden in the shadows. The scene was inspired by the horror movie ‘It,’ about a clown who lures children to their doom, including one boy who was snatched into a storm drain. In their post, the police saw the humor in the display, but chided its creators for leaving out the clown’s calling card: a single red balloon.

A meteorologist in Connecticut was using live nighttime video as a background when a meteor or shooting star appeared. It was definitely a noticeable large white streak in the dark sky. Check out her reaction.

The National Weather Service came out with their Winter Outlook yesterday…take a look at the details.

Temperature

• Warmer-than-average conditions are most likely across the Southern tier of the U.S. and much of the Eastern U.S., with the greatest likelihood of above-average temperatures in the Southeast.
• Below-average temperatures are favored for southeast Alaska and the Pacific Northwest eastward to the northern Plains.
• The Upper Mississippi Valley and small areas of the western Great Lakes have equal chances for below-, near- or above-average temperatures.

Precipitation

• The Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, Great Lakes and parts of the Ohio Valley and western Alaska have the greatest chances for wetter-than-average conditions.
• Drier-than-average conditions are favored in south-central Alaska, southern California, the Southwest, and the Southeast.
• The forecast for the remainder of the U.S. shows equal chances for below-, near- or above-average precipitation during winter months.

Dreary, blustery conditions are forecast for today with highs in the low to mid 50s, breezy northwest winds, and cloudy skies. Widespread frost is expected over much of the state tonight into Friday morning and again Friday night into Saturday morning. Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings have been issued – cover those sensitive outdoor plants! Rain chances return to the area Saturday night with showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms lasting throughout most of the day on Sunday.

Mike Schmit of Markesan, Wisconsin, grew a 2,520-pound pumpkin believed to be the heaviest grown in the U.S. this year, but it was disqualified from competition due to a crack. Schmit says the fingernail-sized crack in the pumpkin’s exterior is believed to be the result of internal pressure from the pumpkin’s large size and the awkward way it was growing. If the pumpkin hadn’t been disqualified, Schmit would’ve won a prize of $22,680 from the 2021 Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California, which offers a prize of $9 per pound to the winner.
