On this day in 1979, the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, better known as simply ESPN, was officially launched. The first-ever all-sports cable network signed on with the debut of SportsCenter hosted by Lee Leonard and George Grande. Following SportsCenter was the coverage of a slow-pitch softball game. Actually, it was a softball double-header. So you can see that the network has certainly come a long way.
