A zoo in China is getting worldwide attention over its new panda exhibit, and it’s not all positive. The Taizhou Zoo has two miniature pandas that visitors have fallen in love with, even though they’re not actually pandas — they’re Chow Chow puppies that have been dyed black and white to look just like giant pandas. Officials are defending the zoo against accusations that they are misleading guests into believing they are mini pandas, insisting that signs at the exhibit advertise them as “panda dogs.” But the bigger problem that’s drawing major backlash around the world, is their practice of using potentially harmful dyes on the dogs for the sole purpose of entertainment and making money. A zoo spokesperson fired back saying, “Normal people dye their hair. Dogs can dye their hair, too. It’s the same as hair.”
Outrage at Chinese Zoo as ‘Panda’ Exhibit Revealed to be Dyed Dogs.
The zoo defended its actions by claiming that the dye was harmless and natural and that the transformation was to make up for the absence of pandas. pic.twitter.com/S4u3lLrBbr
