If you happen to have old, unopened bottles of wine lying around, you might want to dust them off because they may be worth something. A California man splurged on a $250 bottle of wine back in the ’70s and never opened it. In fact, he put it in his basement and forgot all about it. Mark Paulson says he never had an occasion to open the bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche, and now he never will. His son had read about someone else selling a bottle of the same wine at an auction for $80,000, so Paulson made some calls and put it on the auction block. It was expected to sell for between $50,000 and $80,000, but it ended up being sold for $106,000. Not bad for a $250 investment.
Speaking of wine …
Recycling wine correctly … Want to keep that leftover wine fresh? You might think just shoving the cork back into the top will do the trick, but wine experts say that is the worst thing you can do. When you’re trying to save wine and keep it fresh, you want to keep it away from oxygen. Since corks have tons of tiny holes in them, corking your bottle isn’t helping much – it’s just letting more oxygen in, which could ruin your vino. Instead, a sommelier recommends pouring what’s left of your wine into a mason jar or other small, glass container that can be sealed with a lid.
