Elaine Salmon was preparing for the new school year at Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School in California when a black bear wandered into her classroom. The teacher left her otherwise empty room to make copies, and returned to find the bruin wandering around. Salmon then closed the door, trapping the bear inside, and found help. “My first thought was, is it gonna do any damage? I have a brand new floor and I already have my decorations up,” Salmon said. Fortunately, the bear was only interested in the snacks in the classroom’s emergency kit. School officials are planning to replace the door handles with less bear-friendly mechanisms.
