Merriam-Webster has added 640 new words and meanings to its dictionary this year. Among them are, ‘Gig economy,’ ‘stan,’ ‘gender nonconforming’ and ‘snowflake.’ While snowflake isn’t a new word, it can now mean someone who is special or overly sensitive. ‘Gender nonconforming’ is an individual who exhibits traits not typically associated with their birth sex, while ‘gig economy’ refers to freelance or temporary jobs and ‘stan’ is to obsess over a character or celebrity.
