Light snow and strong winds will impact the region this afternoon. Additional snow amounts will be up to 1" along and north of Interstate 90. However, strong wind gusts up to 40 mph will result in some blowing and drifting snow. Localized whiteout conditions can be expected at times, especially in open and unsheltered areas. Travel is expected to continue to be hazardous.
The strong winds will also usher in colder air causing wind chills to fall into the 10 to 30 below range overnight into Thursday morning. The coldest wind chills will be west of the Mississippi River.
Today: Windy, Snow & Localized Whiteouts
- Where: Southeast Minnesota and north-central Wisconsin will see the greatest impacts from snow and/or blowing snow with localized whiteouts.
- Wind: Northwest 15 to 30 mph gusting to 40 mph. Widespread drifting snow with some blowing snow. Localized whiteouts are possible.
- Snow: An additional will be up to 1" along and north of Interstate 90.
- Timing: The worst of the conditions will be this morning
- Impacts: Poor visibility, including localized white-out conditions, mainly in open, unsheltered areas. Travel will be slippery.
- ACTION: be prepared for travel impacts. Slow down. Anticipate sudden reductions to visibility.
Tonight into Thursday: Cold Wind Chills
- What: Wind chills of 10 to 30 below zero.
- Where: entire area, coldest west of the Mississippi River
- Timing: Overnight through much of Thursday
- Impacts: Exposed skin can freeze in as little as 30 minutes.
